Hip-hop fans are mourning the loss of 22-year-old Cali Swag District group member M-Bone (born Mante Ray Talbert) today. Talbert was reportedly shot in front of an Inglewood, CA liquor store late Sunday evening.
According to the Associated Press the Cali Swag District group member was sitting in a car shortly after 10:30 p.m. when another car pulled alongside him. The driver of the car shot the rapper twice in the head. Talbert was taken to an area California hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Lt. James Madia said the motive for Sunday night's shooting is still under investigation. Thus far witnesses have provided varying descriptions of the fleeing car.
"Talbert was the victim of a random act of violence. He was a hardworking, passionate artist and dancer that will be deeply missed," said Cali Swag District's publicist Greg Miller.
The Inglewood, California based Cali Swag District is best known for their billboard chart topping single "Teach Me How to Dougie." The hip-hop song revolves around the "dougie" dance, which consists of casual shoulder leans and elbow twists. Just weeks ago first lady Michelle Obama brought the dance to a whole new, national audience. Mrs. Obama performed the dougie along with other moves from Beyoncé's "Move Your Body" video, as she danced with students at Alice Deal Middle School in Washington D.C.
According to the New York Daily News Cali Swag District's leader C-Smoove, confirmed the death M-Bone via his Twitter account.
"Ma life changed drastically in the. Blink of an eye rip mbone."
If you have somehow managed to miss any U.S. sports this year, you may have missed the one craze unifying players across every field, court and arena: the Dougie.
When John Wall debuted with the Washington Wizards, he was so engulfed with doing the Dougie, he didn't notice his teammates' outstretched hands hoping for a high five. University presidents, sports team owners' and mascots have all been caught on camera practicing the Dougie. Expect to see the de facto victory Dougie in the end zone.
Oh, yes, for the non-sports-oriented: the Dougie is a dance taught in the song "Teach Me How to Dougie," by the hip-hop group Cali Swag District. Released in May, the song pays homage to Doug E. Fresh, a rapper in the late '80s who had a penchant for dancing by smoothing his hair back. The dance consists of improvising your own dance moves, interspersed with brushing back the hair.
"In a long line of Ickey Shuffles and Dirty Birds, it is just the latest example of athletes using work as an excuse to boogie," Ben Cohen wrote at the Wall Street Journal. His profile of the dance craze calls 2010 the "year of the Dougie."
